The main source for Tourism Accommodation and Capacity Statistics in Germany is the Eurostat database[1]. Here the most harmonised and complete European Tourism Statistics can be found. Hence we use definitions according to Eurostat directives:

Hotels and similar Other collective accommodation
9 beds or more

Holiday dwellings = 9 beds or more
Camping sites = 3 pitches or more
Other collective accomodation n.e.s. = 9 beds or more


As additional sources TourMIS[2], destatis [3] and DZT [4] are used complementary with clearly marked references.

Based on the Flash Eurobarometer 291[5] of March 2010 we can identify the interest for their main holiday destination 2010 of the 422 million citizens aged 15+ years in the 27 EU member states (EU27).

  • The Flash Eurobarometer 291 identifies 32.1% (135.5 million) of all EU27 citizens for whom "the environment" has the major influence on their choice of destination:
9.0% (12.2 million) of the EU27 environment as major destination choice criteria are interested in Germany as their main holiday destination 2010. [EU27: 5.6%] Upside down this means: For 51.7% of the 23.6 million EU27 citizens interested in Germany "the environment" has the major influence on their choice of destination [EU27: 32.1%]
  • The Flash Eurobarometer 291 identifies 4.1% (17.1 million) of all EU27 citizens whose major motivation for their main holiday 2009 was "nature":
14.9% (2.6 million) of the EU27 nature motivated are interested in Germany as their main holiday destination 2010. [EU27: 5.6%] Upside down this means: For 10.9% of the 23.6 million EU27 citizens interested in Germany the major motivation for their main holiday 2009 was "nature" [EU27: 4.1%]

[EU27: 5.6%] Upside down this means: For 4.4% of the 23.6 million EU27 citizens interested in Germany the major motivation for their main holiday 2009 was "culture/religion" [EU27: 3.9%]
